Derek Jeter Paddleboard Laminated with HG Photocloth

derek jeter sup paddleboard retirement gift
On May 7, 2014 the Los Angeles Angels gave Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees the coolest SUP (stand up paddleboard) as a gift for his retirement. This beautiful, personalized SUP was shaped by Hobie Stand Up Paddleboards in San Juan Capistrano, California and laminated with HG Photocloth provided by Headline Graphics, Encinitas, California.

When Hobie came to Headline Graphics requesting the graphic, it felt like being a part of baseball's history. "It was an honor to produce and print this beautiful graphic representing all the hard work of one of the best baseball players who ever lived" said Jerry Anderson, President of Headline Graphics.

NY New York Yankees SUP paddleboard
"The most interesting thing about this for us, is that's exactly what Headline Graphics and HG Photocloth is all about. Our goal is to make everyone's dreams come true. We can create what you've always wanted to display into a beautiful laminate for surfboards or SUPs. We are not here to just take the boring blank space away. We are here to help add emotion and life to our customers' boards. What makes us proud is seeing our customers' expressions the first moment they see a complete design and connect with it. We want to be a part of their passion for the sport!"
That custom SUP gift is probably one of the most unique gifts that has ever been given in baseball history.

HG Photocloth Surfboards

RW Surfboards (Carlsbad, CA) just laminated some surfboards with our HG Photocloth Light. We've received great feedback from the handcrafts who affirmed this new material is amazing! HG Photocloth Light is easier to laminate because shapers can actually use the material around all the edges, which makes it practical in the application process. And HG Photocloth Light adds strength to keep your surfboard or SUP safe from daily dings. With high quality resolution, your board will look radical!

Exciting finds for surfing this November

When it comes to surf, this summer has left us very unsatisfied in Southern California. There were weeks with little to no waves and subsequently, the energy levels among my peers were low. The wave conditions became a conversation staple, “When are they coming back?” we’d moan. We, in our spoiled nature due to a very giving San Diego, were a sad site to be seen.

Now that we’re well into October, thankfully a few fun days of surf have rolled through. Our energy levels are slowly recovering and I can see the excitement building as November approaches.

Not only is the new season bringing much awaited new waves, but there seems to be new styles forming as well. Here’s some exciting finds to look forward to when surfing in Northern San Diego this November.
Funky Shaped Boards
People are opting to leave the traditional shaped long board or short board at home and are taking to the water with more creatively shaped designs, such as the asymmetrical surfboard that’s tailored to different styles and abilities when surfing backside verses front side. Also in abundance is a variety of squatty, egg-shaped boards with some interesting tail designs. My impression is that they’re experimental. It seems, too, that even though the retro fish shape never left the scene, there are more in the water than in previous years.

Custom Surfboards Decks

Not only are people getting creative with their board shapes, but also with the artwork on their board decks. It’s becoming a form of expression and here at HG Photocloth, I’ve seen anything from putting a guy’s face on a board to a full leopard print.

Girls with Cheeky Wetsuits
Yep, that’s right. Women’s wetsuits have become their own with new colorful styles and edgy cuts. The water is warm enough to ditch the full wetsuits and women are taking full advantage of it. I must say, it’s a beautiful thing.

Enjoy the season!

HG Photocloth vs. Digital Rice Paper

Many are familiar with digitally output surfboard lams. However, most digital lams are printed on Digital Rice Paper even though the material has its limitations and falls short in key areas. HG Photocloth was developed specifically for digitally outputting images for surfboard lams and is a proprietary technology with many added benefits.

Benefits of HG Photocloth Over Rice Paper

1. HG Photocloth matches CMYK color where Digital Rice Paper cannot. The Digital Rice Paper material absorbs about 30% of the color making it less vibrant. An additional 10-20% of the color is lost when the epoxy resin is applied during the glassing of the surfboard. This results in faded designs and loss of continuity between promotional materials.

2. HG Photocloth retains 100% of its blacks, producing photo-realistic images with pristine detail and crisper edges.

3. HG Photocloth provides UV protection allowing designs to stay true to original color. Digital Rice Paper falls short and, with time, the image will fade even more so than when it was applied.

4. HG Photocloth adds strength to a surfboard, approximately four ounces to the total weight. The structural integrity of the Photocloth prevents heel dings and prolongs the life of a surfboard. Digital Rice Paper has no added strength benefits.

Paddle for Pink

There are a lot of swanky parties in the Hamptons, but not many are held at the North Haven beachfront estate of financier Richard Perry and his wife designer Lisa Perry (whose popular Sixties retro designs are a landmark on Madison Avenue).

On Saturday night (Aug.17) the Perrys opened their cheerful, magnificent home to over 500 people and raised more than $1.2 million for the Breast Cancer Research Fund. They did it for their friend Maria Baum, a breast cancer survivor, and her family including husband Larry Baum. The Baums are co-owners of the mouth watering Tutto il Giorno restaurants in Sag Harbor and Southampton.
It was really a day long event called “Paddle for Pink.” Early Saturday morning, participants had a paddle surf race across the bay from Sag Harbor with star athletes Laird Hamilton and Gabrielle Reece leading the fray.

The nighttime guests — including Hamilton and Reece– munched on food from local restaurants and caterers, danced to a great deejay, and bid on HG Photocloth paddleboards designed by Martha Stewart, Nicole Miller, and several other designers.

Molokai 2013 Paddleboard World Championships

Another great year of racing in challenging conditions at the 2013 Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard World Championships. This is a little look back at the race.

For the event, Headline Graphics had the opportunity to produce the Photocloth laminate that was used in the making of the trophy, done by Shannon Delaney and The Ding King – Brian Szymanski. They sealed a Hawaiian stylized image that was printed on Photocloth over wood, partially allowing the grain to show through. The natural rustic look went perfectly with the event.

Thanks to all the athletes and partners for such an amazing year. The 2013 race delivered some harsh conditions, new faces to the podium, and record numbers of athletes and spectators both at the finish and watching the race online.

6th Annual Pipeline to a Cure Gala

This year, for the 6th Annual Pipeline to a Cure Gala benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), HG Photocloth was proudly used in the making of the event surfboard.

Pipeline to a Cure is an annual event held to raise money and awareness for sufferers of Cystic Fibrosis. It grew from the idea to spread awareness of a discovery made by Australian researchers, that children suffering from CF who surfed regularly had significantly better lung health. We now know that the salty air is medically beneficial to CF patients and surfing provides the added benefit of exercise.

As guests, we enjoyed an evening of celebrity entertainment, fabulous food and spectacular silent and live auctions. The annual galas have collectively raised $800,000 to date. In addition CFF and Pipeline to a Cure supporters often organize regular surfing trips for children with CF.

Special guests included Mike & Christine Ness, Laird Hamilton, Tony Hawk, Gabrielle Reece, Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day), Jason Lezak, Lisa Andersen, Tom Curren, Dave Kalama, Robert August, and Chuck Patterson, with performances by Mike Ness and the Kalama Brothers.

What do you get when you mix Kentucky bourbon and surfboards?

Drunk surfers? - WRONG.

Killer surfboards for Jim Beam? – CORRECT!!!
Made by the father/son duo of Iron Cross Surfboards? – Even better.
For Jim Beam’s summer promotions they sought out RoughHouse for 60 custom surfboards that could be hung in bars all over Southern California.  After Headline Graphics designing and printing the Jim Beam graphic on the HG Photocloth we handed off the glass work to the local guys at IronCross Surfboards.
Born and raised in Cardiff by the Sea, father and son team Jeff and Jay Grygera brought the project to life, glassing all 60 boards in their factory in San Marcos, Ca.
Meet Jeff and Jay and watch as they mix Kentucky bourbon with surfboards.

Robert Lewis Vietnam Remembrance Surfboard

The Vietnam War claimed the lives of 58,220 of our country’s finest men and women, those who displayed the full measure of devotion by making the ultimate sacrifice. The soldiers who were fortunate enough to make it home were left with ghastly memories of a nightmare come reality. Over 150,000 additional veterans committed suicide as a direct result of the war.
Robert Lewis - 1968
Robert Lewis, 2nd Battalion 13th Marine Artillery Regiment, served 13 months in the Vietnam War. This period of time still haunts him to this day. “I was locked in this war. It is a part of me.”

In 2007, in an attempt to find closure, Lewis took part in The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Paddle-out remembering the fallen heroes.  He found the event to be of such spirit that he had a custom surfboard created in remembrance of the day. Slow to speak, Lewis explains the meaning of the board, “It represents a period in my life, the friends I lost during that time. It’s my farewell; the paddle-out was my goodbye… I can now face the Vietnam RemembranceWall without crying.”

Last week, Lewis came to Headline Graphics to pick up his surfboard and had some of his surviving buddies sign it before taking it home. “This is my closure.”

Tommy Hilfiger Collaborates with Artists on Limited-Edition Surfboards Printed on HG Photocloth

by Alicia Lund

Iconically preppy clothing line Tommy Hilfiger is launching a new East meets West Coast-inspired Surf Shack capsule collection. The colorful mix of swimwear, dresses, shorts, blazers, and accessories will be available on May 15 complete with six limited-edition surfboards produced in collaboration with the Art Production Fund, a nonprofit that supports public art projects. When asked about the partnership, Hilfiger stated: "(APF) combines my love of great American art with APF's mission to produce public art projects, reach new audiences, and increase awareness of contemporary art."

In collaboration with APF, Hilfiger invited five artists of varying talent, Scott Campbell, Raymond Pettibon, Richard Phillips, Lola Montes Schnabel, and Gary Simmons to custom-create surfboard designs for the brand. The outcome is unique to the all-American brand, completely inspiring, and slightly edgy as seen in these exclusive photos of both Pettibon and Campbell's boards.
"Lola, Richard, Scott, Gary, and Raymond have incredibly varied styles and brought unique perspectives to the project, which created a diverse and exciting result. From pop-culture portraits to mystical abstracts, they applied their innovative creative visions to the boards and I find each of them very inspiring."

We love the mix of California-carefree-surf culture with a dash of preppy flair. The capsule collection including the limited-edition surf boards will be available for purchase in select Tommy Hilfiger stores on May 15.
